When we hear the words Mardi Gras, we automatically think of New Orleans, beads, parades, masks, and costumes. We celebrated in a similar way on February 13. The French began to celebrate “Carnevale” in the Middle Ages and named it “Mardi Gras” which translates into “Fat Tuesday”. The French settled in New Orleans, and brought the Mardi Gras tradition with them. It was customary to end the Mardi Gras celebration by eating a slaughtered calf. Instead we enjoyed Gumbo, lovingly made by Mother Margaret, and King Cake (direct from New Orleans) generously provided by our Court Jester and Louisiana native, Ginger Hamilton.
What is Mardi Gras without a Royal Court? Our fabulous court was made up of many important Royals.
Every court needs someone to make us smile. Our Hospitality Chairwomen Madam Butterfly, aka Rita, will always have a word of encouragement for the Royal Family.
Together, Princesses Ann and Grace, aunts of the Queen, are the keepers of the card table and all the games. They are known for their acute sharpness playing Kings in the Corner or is it KING in the Corner? Their matching hats are gifts from the Queen of England.
Our royal guest, Erlinda, from the Philippines recently married the King of Sweden. She has chosen to attend the Royal Gala wearing a Calvin Klein gown inspired by the country of Uganda.
Our Royal Court was pleased to introduce the kingdom’s Activity Coordinator, Kitty. She recently declared Bingo will be added every day to our schedule of events, however, sadly, it was vetoed.
Next on the Court is Barren Bark-A-Lot, the Royal Protector Dog. The royal dog ensures that nothing happens to our dear King and Queen and their grounds. Those who are up to no good need to beware of Barren Bark-A-Lot! He is also commissioned to push the Queen Mother, Vivian, in her wheelchair wherever she would like to go. The Queen Mother Vivian feeds Bark-A-Lot, and trains Bark-A-Lot to only bark a lot at enemies of the Kingdom.
Queen Elaine, the beautiful and gracious Queen of Palatine, and the reigning Queen of Mardi Gras 2018 was the Princess of Elk Grove until she moved to Palatine. She is known for her smile, and gentle way.
King Donald, the gentle-hearted King of Palatine and reigning King of Mardi Gras 2018. He is known for continuing Bingo in the Kingdom (but not every day) and making many people happy!
It was a joyful Mardi Gras celebration. In the tradition of the City of New Orleans, we ate, drank, and were merry – for we all knew that tomorrow (Ash Wednesday) would bring us into the Lenten Season.
